"MB Quart Discus DSD 216
The 6½-inch MB Quart Discus DSD 216 ($399) is the big man in this group, with a woofer half an inch larger than the other two woofers. (By the way, you may know that MB Quart was acquired by Rockford Fosgate last year.) The Discus system features the DWC 160 woofer (with polypropylene cone, rubber surround, and stamped basket), the RTC 19 3/4-inch "pure titanium dome" tweeter (with neo-dymium magnet), and the DXD 216 crossover. The latter—3¥ x 1¥ x 5 inches (w/h/l)—has a clear plastic cover and 12-dB per octave high- and low-pass filtering. Its barrier strip with three tweeter levels (0, –3, and –6 dB) is accessible from outside the case. The barrier-screw terminals on the woofer basket are a nice touch (avoiding the need for you to have to worry about crimping or soldering).

The MB Quart system comes packaged with metal grilles for both drivers, a plastic woofer-mounting ring, an installation guide, and a cutout template, not to mention surface, flush, and tilt-flush tweeter-mounting cups. Hardware is supplied, but the wiring isn’t.

Specifications include a frequency response of 40 to 32,000 Hz (no tolerance in dB was given), a sensitivity of 89 dB, and a "power range" of 50 to 120 watts. Warranty is 3 years if the speakers are installed by an authorized dealer; otherwise, 1 year. MB Quart Sound Quality
The MB Quart DSD 216 delivered a clear, natural, and detailed tonal balance. Male vocals—such as an outdoor recording of ME Senior Contributor David Clark—were natural, and the ambience of the recording was faithfully reproduced. Likewise, reproduction of female vocals and acoustic instruments (such as Jennifer Warnes’ singing and Paul Ostermayer’s accompanying tenor saxophone on the title track to Warnes’ Famous Blue Raincoat, on Private Music) was virtually indistinguishable from the sound of it on my reference home-theater system. Likewise, the reverb added to Suzanne Vega’s vocal on "Tom’s Diner" (from Solitude Standing, on A&M) was clearly audible, with tonal balance perfectly following the vocal. Similarly, massed voices in chorale pieces were often individually distinguishable. "
